Frequently Asked Questions

Just what are the sinuses?

The sinuses are air-containing chambers of varying size in the skull. They generate a thin, mucous blanket which is discharged from the sinus into the nose. A sinus chamber has only one small passage through which the mucous passes.

Where are the sinuses?

The sinuses are located near the eyes. Those above the eyes are the frontal sinuses. Between the eyes, separated by a bony partition, are two clusters or chambers called the ethmoid sinuses. Those below the eyes are the Maxillary sinuses. At the back of the nose are the sphenoid sinuses.

Are sinuses present at birth?

A few small sinuses are present at birth. However, sinus development is an on-going process that begins in-utero and continues throughout childhood, adolescence and into early adult life.

Why do we have sinuses?

While your sinuses are not essential to life, their well-being influences the critical nasal functions of humidifying, warming and filtering the air we breathe before it goes into the lungs. Other functions include making the skull lighter, because the dense bone is replaced with air-containing chambers. Some feel the sinuses serve as resonating chambers for speaking and singing.
